This World 'BEE' worried...
October 2006, reports of drone bees not returning to the hive, thus killing the colony. This problem is getting worse: in America, Canada, and Europe, reports of lost worker bees have disrupted the growth cycle pattern of crops. Congress has had hearings on 'Colony Collapse Disorder' or 'Bee Syndrome' and knows this is causing a major problem for the 15 billion dollar a year ‘service’ that these honey Bees provide.
The hives affected by this exotic
collapse are the European bee in 'migratory hives':
that are transported by truck for pollination services to farms and orchards (some cross state lines). More perplexing, boxes are left whole. Food and pollen normally would be removed and used by other bees, beetles or moths.
Theories abound: from cell phone interference, transport vibration or fumes, parasitic mites (or chemicals used to kill them), pesticides, stress, a fungus, a virus, a new found 'Israeli virus', or could it be the mysterious 'disappearance disease' as in the1930s and 1970s? Curious still: Bumble, Wild bees and other ‘bee’ types are not affected.
The cause is still not known and they may vary. Bee keepers, congress, scientists, scholars and others are desperately searching for the cause that wipes out the entire hive.
Help may come from new bees
being introduced into existing hives, drugs to boostimmunity,
stopping pesticide use and adding
natural land ‘buffers’ for affected hives. What ever the solution is this mysterious syndrome, affects us all,! 2011 update, some colonies in the Americas have slighty recovered but the crisis continues. As of 2015 still in limbo!
